What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
BMI is a screening tool used to identify possible weight problems for adults. It is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. While it doesn't measure body fat directly, it correlates reasonably well with direct measures of body fat for most people.
BMI Categories (Adults)
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and CDC:
| BMI Range | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Healthy Weight |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 and Above | Obesity |
Limitations of BMI
BMI is not a perfect measure. It does not distinguish between excess fat, muscle, or bone mass.
- Athletes: May have a high BMI because of increased muscularity rather than increased body fatness.
- Older Adults: May have more body fat than younger adults with the same BMI.
- Muscle Loss: People who have lost muscle may have a healthy BMI but still carry excess fat.
