The Fertile Window
Conception occurs when a sperm fertilizes an egg. Ovulation usually happens around day 14 of a 28-day cycle. However, sperm can survive inside the female body for up to 5 days, while the egg survives for only 12-24 hours.
This means your "fertile window" is actually about 6 days long:
- The 5 days leading up to ovulation
- The day of ovulation itself (peak fertility)
Factors Affecting Conception
- Cycle Length: Not everyone has a 28-day cycle. Short or long cycles shift the ovulation date.
- Stress & Diet: Can delay ovulation or cause anovulatory cycles.
- Age: Fertility naturally declines with age, especially after 35.
